Severe Weather and Lightning Detection Alerts

Severe Weather Policy

Severe Weather or Tornado Watch: Play may continue with caution. Local weather radar and National Weather Service updates should be monitored to determine if activity should be suspended or cancelled. Activities should be cancelled if the field does not have sufficient shelter in case of an emergency.

Tornado or Severe Weather Warning: Play should be suspended immediately. All participants, officials, and spectators must vacate the field and seek shelter.

Safety is of utmost importance. If the conditions do not appear to be safe, it is best to wait until the weather circumstances change or cancel the activity regardless of weather reports.

Vernon Hills' Lightning Alert System

Vernon Hills' Lightning Alert System is installed at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex (VHAC) and the 9-Hole Golf Course.

Alert Signal: When lightning is detected within a 10 mile radius, horns sound one 15-second blast and strobe light flashes. All activity must cease and all participants, officials, and spectators must vacate the field and seek shelter for a period of 30 minutes. The 30 minute clock will reset after each detected lightning event.

All-Clear Signal: The Lightning Alert System sounds three 5-second blasts and stops the strobe light after the system has not detected lightning within a 10 miles radius for a period of 30 minutes.

Fields without the Lightning Alert System: When thunder is heard, or a cloud–to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend play for at least 30 minutes and take shelter immediately.

Common sense should still govern, and if the conditions do not appear to be safe to resume outside activity it is best to wait until the weather circumstances change regardless of an all clear from the lightning detection system.
